Adhesive System 400 is a medium-firm acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive system. It features an excellent balance of good initial adhesion (quick stick) and good shear holding power.
Application Techniques • Bond strength is dependent upon the amount of adhesive-to-surface contact developed. Firm application pressure helps develop better adhesive contact and improve bond strength. • To obtain optimum adhesion, the bonding surfaces must be clean, dry and well unified. Typical surface cleaning solvents are isopropyl alcohol and water (rubbing alcohol) or heptane. Note: Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s precautions and directions for use when using solvents. • Ideal tape application temperature range is 70°F to 100°F (21°C to 38°C). Initial tape application to surfaces at temperatures below 50°F (10°C) is not recommended because the adhesive becomes too firm to adhere readily. However, once properly applied, low temperature holding is generally satisfactory.
The 3M 924 ATG tape is one of a number of 3M products intended for use in their adhesive transfer "guns." Some of the products are a re-positionable adhesive, some are designed for maximum adhesion, some have more resistance to shear. The 924 tape is a medium-tack, medium shear strength compromise product. In my experience, its main use in framing is in holding together multi-layered mats and attaching rear dust covers to the completed frame. I\'m not familiar with its being used for attaching canvas to stretchers - in my experience, staples are still viewed as the "tried and true" solution for that application.
By the way, these products aren\'t really "tape," but are rather an adhesive that is carried on a tape, and transfered by pressure to the surface which is to be glued - they leave a sticky strip of adhesive on the target surface, but there is no tape applied to that surface.
